Death is more universal than life, everyone dies but not everyone lives. Joe Howlett lived life to the fullest!

Joe (“Joey”) Howlett died when his house collapsed on September 12, 2013, during recent flooding in Jamestown, Colorado. He was born in Portland, Oregon, on April 16, 1941, to Chester and Virginia Howlett. He attended Central Catholic High School for three years before transferring to St. Bonafice in Sublimity, Oregon, for his senior year. He played halfback in the Oregon East-West Shrine Game in 1959. He worked his way through Portland State University as a clerk at Strohecker’s Grocery Store, then served as a salesman for Pendleton Woolen Mills Company. He moved to Colorado in 1969. With his former wife, Susie, he bought the Jamestown Mercantile (fondly known as the “Merc”) in 1986, reviving the business into the small mountain community’s gathering spot. After his retirement in 2010, he maintained an active role in the business and the town. He will be remembered for his loving sincerity and great generosity. He is survived by his son, Zach Howlett; and his brothers, Chet and Richard Howlett; and by many dear friends. Share memories of his joyful life at http://joey-howlett.last-memories.com/.  To help rebuild the Merc as the heart of a recovering Jamestown, please make memorial contributions to the new owners—Rainbow and Adam Shultz and their two small children—whose home and livelihood have been devastated by the disaster (Jamestown Mercantile, P.O. Box 59, Jamestown, CO 80455). Joe’s memorial will be held at the Greenbriar Inn, located at the intersection of Highway 36 and Lefthand Canyon (8735 Foothills Highway), from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M on Saturday, October 19, followed by music at Wapos (4929 N. Broadway) from 3 to 6 P.M. There will be a $20 suggested donation to cover food expenses and benefit the town.

This memorial website was created to remember our dearest Joey Howlett born on April 16, 1941 and left us on September 11, 2013. He was a father, friend, and the patriarch of Jamestown.  He will live forever in our memories and hearts.

A Memorial Service to honour Joey is on Saturday, October 19th.  This Celebration of Life will be in two parts!  We're starting at The Greenbriar Inn from 11:00am until 3:00pm then going to Wapo's Cantina (formerly the Terrace Maya) from 3:00pm until whenever they kick us out.

We hope that you can attend, but if not please do not despair. This Memorial Service shall be the first in what we believe will be MANY Celebrations of Life to honour Joey.

We are requesting financial assistance to pay for this service while also raising money for Jamestown.  In true Jamestown fashion, this Celebration of Life will also be a fundraiser.  BUT we all know that these are tight, stressful financial times for everyone.  Please come and celebrate even if you have no money to give right now.  We think Joey would have wanted it this way!  It is more important than ever for Joey's family, friends, neighbors, and bicyclists to come together!

Please use this website to it's fullest potential by sharing photos and videos, lighting candles, sharing memories, and giving your condolences to Zach.
